If you want to know when Darth Vader appears on screen, the answer depends on which version of the timeline you’re looking at. This character did not appear in the first movie that everyone remembers. He did not appear in Star Wars (1977). The film was later titled Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Vader’s face remains hidden under a black helmet until later entries.
He steps out more fully in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980). Here, the mask stays on for most of the runtime.
