The Lincoln Memorial pool keeps ruining the headlines.
Ever since April.
Back then President Trump promised a makeover. He wanted it scrubbed and painted “American flag blue” by the 4th of July. A patriotic splash of color, you know? The administration delivered on the logistics at least. They stripped it. Cleaned it. Coated it. Refilled it.
Great start.
Then, days later, the green returned. Same old algae. Same problem it has been having for decades.
It is embarrassing, sure, but also weirdly resilient. Why does this stuff bounce back so fast? Why is it so hard to kill? Ian Sample dug into it for a new podcast episode. He talks to co-host Madeleine Finlay. Also Dr. Linda May from the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrolicity. She is a freshwater expert.
They break down the science. Mostly they talk about why simple painting jobs fail against biological stubbornness.
The pool was prepped perfectly but biology doesn’t care about political timelines.
There are better ways to handle this next time. Probably. Or at least there are ideas worth looking at. The episode covers the mechanics of these blooms. It explains why they happen. And why Trump might need more than a paint brush to fix this.
You can listen to it now.
Is there anything simpler than filling a pool with water? Maybe not, but keeping it clean? That’s the tricky part. 🌿
